▼水戸芸術館ＡＴＭ速報２００８年１月１４日発 -----------------

偕楽園の眼下に広がる美しい淡水湖、市民に心から愛され、
観光客に感嘆の声を上げさせる千波湖への想いを込めて、
水戸市が千波湖のホームページを開設しました。

千波湖とその周辺は、偕楽園の借景となっている自然豊かな空間で、
現在、茨城県が、千波湖周辺の公園緑地等を「偕楽園公園」とし、
一体的な整備を進めています。その整備面積は約300haにも及び、
中心市街地に位置する都市公園としては、ニューヨークの
セントラルパークに次ぐ世界第2位の広さを誇ります。

市民の憩いと安らぎの場であり、また、水戸市が「水の都」である
ことの象徴（シンボル）としての千波湖--先人から受け継いだ
貴重な財産--を、次代に豊かに引き継ぐために、水戸市は、
千波湖とその周辺におけるあらゆる事業を「千波湖プロジェクト」
と呼び、市民と協力しあって進めてゆきます。

水戸市の「千波湖ホームページ」は、そのような取り組みを刻々と
お伝えするものとして開設されました。
水質浄化、環境保全、観光など、千波湖及びその周辺にかかわる
施策はもちろん、千波湖の魅力、周辺におけるにぎわいが紹介され
ます。

千波湖の規模
------------
面積：約332,000平方メートル
周囲：約3,100メートル
平均水深：約1.0メートル
最大水深：約1.2メートル
容量：約365,000立方メートル

＊千波湖は、その平均水深が、約1.0ｍ程度であるため、
  分類上は「沼」となるが、昔から「千波湖」と呼ばれている。
  なお、法律上は河川（桜川の一部）に位置づけられている。

Senba Lake is a freshwater lake spreading before one of
Japan's three celebrated gardens, Kairakuen (the others are
Kenrokuen in Kanazawa City and Korakuen in Okayama City).
The lake and its vicinity serve as the "borrowed landscape"
for Kairakuen. As a space rich with nature, the whole area
has long been enjoyed by citizens and many tourists alike.

Ibaraki Prefecture is now engaged in preparations to turn
Senba Lake and the green park areas around it into "Kairakuen
Park." The area extends to around 300 hectares, making it
the world's second-largest centrally-located urban park
after Central Park in New York.

Senba Lake provides a place of relaxation, recreation and
repose for the citizens of Mito, and is the symbol of Mito
as a "water city." To preserve this precious, bountiful asset,
handed down from our ancestors, for future generations, all
the activities to Senba Lake and its vicinity have been
subsumed under the "Senba Lake Project" in cooperation with
the citizens.

From that perspective, Mito City's Senba Lake Web site has
been initiated to introduce the beauty and charm of Senba
Lake, as well as the activities taking place in the area
around it. That includes descriptions of water purification,
environmental protection, tourism, and measures and policies
being put in place in the surrounding areas.

Area: Approx. 332,000 square meters, or 33.2 hectares
      (3.57 million square feet, or 82 acres)
Perimeter:  Approx. 3,100 meters, or 3.1 kilometers
      (10,170 feet, or 1.93 miles)
Average depth: Approx. 1.0 meters
      (3 feet, 3 inches)
Maximum depth: Approx. 1.2 meters
      (3 feet, 11 inches)
Capacity: Approx. 365,000 cubic meters
      (96.4 million gallons)
Note: As the average depth of Senba Lake is only one meter,
it ought to be classified as a "marsh," but even so, it has
long been referred to as Senba Lake. Legally speaking,
however, it is considered part of Sakura River.
